These are all activities you should perform daily to keep your kitchen in good shape. Taking care of these small tasks regularly means you’ll have less work to do the next time you get around to deep cleaning this part of your house.

  • Wash any dirty dishes or run the dishwasher.
  • Empty the dishwasher if needed.

There is no need to go overboard with your daily kitchen cleaning. The point here is to keep your kitchen in a functional and orderly manner so that you won’t be hindered when you’re cooking and preparing food. This is especially important in smaller kitchens, where clutter can really affect your ability to carry out simple tasks.

While cooking, any appliances, containers, utensils and surfaces that you’ve used but don’t need anymore, wash them straight away! It saves up time and space immediately, so why not kill two birds with one stone?

Weekly kitchen cleaning checklist

Next up on our kitchen cleaning checklist are the weekly tasks. You don’t have to do these tasks as often, but they’re still important in order to keep your kitchen looking its best.

  • Sort the fridge out and throw away any expired products and leftovers.
  • Replace your tea towels and throw the old ones in the washing machine.
  • Wash the rubbish bin and let it air dry.
  • Clean the kitchen sink and the drain.
  • Sanitise the drying board and dish drainer.
  • Clean the small appliances – toaster, kettle (descale if needed), microwave, etc.
  • Clean the exterior of your large kitchen appliances.
  • Dust any light fittings and other surfaces.
  • Wipe and polish any glass surfaces.
  • Remove any grease stains on the walls.
  • Mop the floor.

No kitchen cleaning checklist is complete without these monthly activities. These are the larger tasks that you only need to do once in a while. However, they are just as important for the well-being of your kitchen.

  • Sort through the freezer and throw away any spoiled food.
  • Defrost freezer if needed.
  • Clean the inside of the fridge. Don’t forget the drip pan!
  • Clean the dishwasher inside and out.
  • Wipe and organise your cupboards and drawers.
  • Spot clean the kitchen wall tile where necessary.
  • Degrease any surfaces where cooking grease may gather – remove grease from cabinet doors, cooker hood, etc..

Quarterly kitchen cleaning checklist

The final stop on this kitchen cleaning checklist is the quarterly tasks. You only need to perform them a few times a year, so sit back and relax for now, but don’t forget to tackle them when the time comes!

  • Deep clean the oven inside and out.
  • Clean oven door glass.
  • Clean the fridge coils. Just unplug the fridge first!
  • Clean the microwave.
  • Sort through your spices and throw out any old and expired ones. Make a list of what needs to be replenished.
  • Get rid of broken cookware, dishes and utensils.
  • Declutter your kitchen, cabinets and counters.

This checklist is where some elbow grease is needed! The top example on the list is enough to make anyone shudder. Cleaning grease off an oven can be difficult, but with the right products and approach, it can be cleaned easily.

Not to mention, if you haven’t got any cleaning chemicals on hand or are more of an eco-friendly cleaning person, you can use a mixture of baking soda and water. Baking soda isn’t only amazing at removing stains and smells, but it also has useful disinfectant properties. Which means it can be used in a variety of other kitchen cleaning chores.

Make it regular

We know it can be difficult to find time to clean the kitchen, as it is often the room that requires the most effort. And as it requires effort, we always push it back. To avoid this, set yourself specific dates or make a home cleaning schedule that you can keep to. This makes it much easier over time because it will become part of a habit.

It helps in the long run, too! The more organised and clean your kitchen is, the less effort you will have to invest in your monthly or quarterly cleans. Don’t postpone the kitchen cleaning and decluttering til the last minute! This is where it becomes the chore we all dread, plus, you might get smelly drains, which will take even more time to fix.
